Natural Genetic Engineering Allowed Plants to Move from Water to Land |

This seems to have nothing to do with James Shapiro’s “NGE”, it’s just plain old horizontal gene transfer. The organism has no way of knowing what the phenotypic effects of picking up some foreign piece of DNA floating around in the environment, and inserting it somewhere in it’s genome, will be.
