Perhaps this argument will never be settled.
I think volcanism has been quite well established as (at least one of the primary) causes of the Permian extinction for a while now.

The Permian extinction of 252 MYA and the Chicxulub asteroid impact 66 MYA suspected of causing the K-Pg extinction are two different events.
