I plan to get back to arcane topics and more “intellectual” cartoons directed at scientists, historians, philosophers, theologians, mathematicians/statisticians, and academics/scholars in general—but this week I got a bit silly for a broader audience.

This one has already appeared this week in a relevant thread but I’m trying to put all recent cartoons in one place so that visitors to PS can easily find them. Therefore, each Cartoon Friday will include all of that week’s cartoons.

I thought of this one when I was in physics class way back in 1970. Yeah, adolescents love these kinds of jokes. And the very concept of an “ideal gas” naturally led me to think about those gasses which are less than ideal under any conceivable circumstance.

A.I. engine have a terrible time rendering text, such as in this sign. The text always gets corrupted. In this case the Gemini Advanced version of my lawn sign sounds even more stoned than my original.

A colleague once told me that a pastor friend had claimed that this actually happened to him after a Sunday service. However, I’ve not seen documented evidence in the peer-reviewed pastoral literature so I remain skeptical.

Back in the early 1980’s when I found myself at a smaller private university [my previous lowly Lecturer position was at a huge state university] teaching _undergrads_ for the first time, everybody was required to serve as Faculty Advisor to at least 25 students. And I had one who thought the course, “Intro to A.I.” was an educational methodologies course for anyone who wanted to eventually be an Associate Instructor.

A university colleague once told me that one of his advisees confused “Pharmacology” as a reference to “Farm Ecology.” I think he was pulling my leg.

Anyway, I did this one for a retired professor who has his doctorate in criminal justice and occasionally teaches criminology at the local community college where I think this scenario _could_ possibly happen.

I don’t want any trouble from Disney so I avoided stating the nanny’s name. Actually, Mary Poppins was created by Australian-British writer P.L. Travers in her series of books, the first published in 1934. Disney secured only film adaptation rights but they are known to be very aggressive in their copyright litigations so I want to play it safe.

Back around the same time (when I was an undergrad) I overheard one of my CoSci professors tell about the first day of his “Artificial Intelligence” class. There was one student dressed like a cowboy\* who looked a bit out of place. After class this student approached him and asked _“What all this computer stuff have to do with Artificial Insemination?”_  
It seems he was a Agriculture major in the Range Management program, and he had signed up without carefully checking the course catalog.

\* This was in Laramie, WY, where people dressed as a cowboys are not unusual, but he would have looked out of place among the geeky CoSci majors at the time.

In the 1980s after graduating from university, I worked in a toxicology lab at the University of Arizona, in the Pharmacology & Toxicology department, and received an actual mailing (some kind of advert) addressed to the Department of Farm Ecology. We were all ecstatic.

P.S. Nice move to attach enthusiasm for jokes about… erm… non-ideal gases to “adolescents.” Maybe it’ll work.

Years ago, when I told people that I studied geology I sometimes was asked if I was going to become a minister. The correct answer eluded me until much later: ‘Perhaps I can become Minister of Petroleum’.

Great idea. A **Minister of Petroleum** sounds like a prestigious cabinet position in a Middle Eastern country.
