My theory:

Zoroastrians taught killing snakes was a good deed… the only major ancient culture with such a view.

Snakes were killed by stepping on the head.

Consistent wuth the idea that Genesis was a book about the Bronze Age WRITTEN after the Babylonian Captivity… maybe even after the arrival of Alexander the Great.
