Ashwin and Rumraket on Design and Designers

Nobody is willing to say these rocks have “design”… atleast not in the way found in life.

Which just raises the question what these people really mean by design, and how they tell things that are “designs” apart from things that aren’t.

It’s a good question. If biologists want to talk about design without a designer… they might also have to explain what they mean by design.

Codswallop. Design without a designer can co-exist with a deity - it does not preclude the possibility that there is a deity who is otherwise engaged.

Dams can be built by humans, by beavers, or happen naturally via landslides, ice build-up or fallen trees. Noting the existence of natural dams in no way requires making claims about the existence of humans or beavers.

This is one of those illogical statements that might be ill-advised in a job interview…

I have no hesitation in saying that natural dams are not designed.

But are you thereby making a claim about the existence of beavers?

I think you’ve completely missed the point.

I didn’t categorize the dams built by beavers as natural…
I was referring to dams that happen via landslides and such.
If you categorized dams built by beavers as natural… then you would have to do the same for beavers…
And yes, if someone saw a dam built by a beaver, he/she could hypothesise that it didn’t happen via a landslide… and perhaps an animal is involved.
I.e, Dams built by beings with agency isbfundamentally different from dams built via landslides.
Do you disagree?

You’ve completely missed the point. I don’t think you even understand what you wrote.

P.S. You have not been selected for a follow-up interview.

So you think it’s impossible to differentiate between a dam built by a beaver and one formed via a landslide?
