If you are looking for an admission that we do not have a complete reconstruction of what happened a billion years ago, you can put away the instruments of torture. For my part, I freely volunteer that we do not. If god of the gaps is your apologetic, you are free to swim in that ever shrinking pool.
However, I take note that you do not compare protein families such as opsins, which feature in various functions of solar energy capture, vision, ion pumping, neurology, and are found in viruses, bacteria, fungi, vertebrates and invertebrates, with the same enthusiasm. Similarly, keratin’s are adaptable and ubiquitous structural materials. The pathways to different functions performed by these proteins are much shorter.
I remember those threads because, somewhere in those discussions, Ann implied that scientists in the late 50’s/early 60’s designed and telekinetically caused a specific mutation.
Hi Ron
I think what Sal is trying to show is UCD is not supported by the protein sequence data. I am not talking about UCD with Divine guidance but UCD by reproduction and natural biological mechanisms.
You might or might not be able to argue for duplication and divergence based on protein families such as keratin but that would be inadequate support of the UCD by reproduction and natural mechanisms claim.
I’m going to assume that Bill here is talking about beloved character actor Andy Devine, and I think we can all agree with Bill that he had no influence on evolution, though who can forget his performance in the original Stagecoach?
His peculiar wheezy voice was first thought likely to prevent him from moving to the talkies, but instead, it became his trademark. Devine claimed that his distinctive voice resulted from a childhood accident in which he fell while running with a curtain rod in his mouth at the Beale Hotel in Kingman, causing the rod to pierce the roof of his mouth. When he was able to speak again, he had a labored, scratchy, duo-tone voice. A biographer, however, indicated that this was one of several stories Devine fabricated about his voice.
