Nathan Lents at CFI: ID and Science Denial

Yes, I believe I was the first to notice the dodgy chart, at least on PS.

I knew he died. Shit, did I say something I shouldn’t have? lol But I thought for sure he was involved in the founding. Hmm. Oh well, this will give the DI plenty to say that I got wrong in the inevitable articles they write about me, lol.

The place where you can distinguish yourself is by quickly acknowledging and rightly explaining how it didn’t affect your main point  .

I tried to do shout outs to Art and Josh. Got tripped up here and there. Josh, how did I pronounce your name? hahaha

I believe you used the present tense when talking about Johnson’s faculty position. A small thing that no one probably would catch.

I think you just referred to him in the present tense at one point - something like ā€œJohnson is a professorā€¦ā€

Ah ok. Oh well.

Honestly, he was a pretty nice guy too. I was lucky to have met him. He was important in the origin of IDM, but I don’t think he can be blamed for much since his stroke over a decade ago, which took him largely out of the game.

Nice, engaging talk, @NLENTS.

To be fair, I think @Art led the way on the APOB stuff.

Thanks friend. And shit, I think I said Richard Paley instead of William. Damn it. lol

It was all verbal, so mistakes like that happen. No worries.

Could have been worse - like Richard Petty.

I hosted a virtual colloquium speaker last week and misstated his postdoc advisor’s name, even though I know it well. Names are surprisingly easy to misstate while speaking contemporaneously.

What about my name @nlents?

How did I pronounce it?? hahaha Glenn Branch just emailed me with a bunch of small corrections. So much for getting all the details right! haha. Nothing major, though, and all in the historical stuff.

Yep, just read this thread to jog my memory. I’ll drop a blog post later today or Monday and spread more credit around for the polar bear work. I remember staying up until 3a that night reading the Liu paper and writing the blog post, but I forgot how much of a team effort it was to go through it all. I’ll also correct the misstatements I made about the early history of the DI. All minor stuff, but as @swamidass says, it’s worth it to admit mistakes quickly.

Or Adele Dazeem.

This thread was also very interesting:

Basically, none of the variants being discussed found their way into the finished polar bear genome.

This whole episode was/is a great example of teamwork - many participants here contributed.

Okay, I heard it now. I pronounced it Swamidass when it should actually be pronounced Swamidass.
