But yeah, all non-coding DNA is junk. Sure.

I notice that the authors provide no citation to back up the claim that the piece of DNA they’re looking at has “long been deemed to have no function”. It’s weird how this keeps happening in these types of papers. They claim the DNA they are analyzing was previously deemed nonfunctional, but they never quote or cite anyone saying it was nonfunctional. There appears to have been no such person saying that.

Even worse, the statement about it previously being deemed nonfunctional is only found in the popular press article, not in the actual paper.
