Genesis and the Necessity of the Flood

Look closer: I said the text on this point is vague, and as a result the cosmology is nonexistent. I don’t believe the Bible teaches any kind of cosmology, but instead uses generally anthropocentric language to describe the world and cosmos in a way that is completely accurate, but not intended to create a clear scientific cosmology.

I didn’t claim the author didn’t know the meaning, I said the text was deliberately vague when it comes to cosmology. It was not God’s purpose to reveal a scientific understanding of cosmology in the Bible.

“Under the sky” is simply a description of human experience under the dome which the peoples of the Ancient Near East assumed “covered” the disk of land which extended to the horizon in all directions. (It is typically described in textbooks as an upside-down bowl covering a dinner plate.) HASHAMAYIM doesn’t imply something which extended to the entire atmosphere of planet earth or somehow carried a global meaning.

Later we learn that the sun, moon and stars were set in this expanse: Genesis 1:14 “And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night.”

So…those waters above the expanse are left out of the picture when Day 4 refers to the lights that are for signs, seasons, days, and years.

So we are out of luck learning about those waters? Nope I found out lots more fun passages to consider. Before I go there, I had been considering that the “waters” of Genesis 1:2 were some kind of primordial soup, maybe quark-gluon plasma. Something liquid and transparent.

Then I began doing more bible study to figure out what in the world the waters above the expanse are. But what else does something liquid and transparent sound like? Well to me, it sounded like superfluid dark matter. We sure can’t see it, it’s liquid-y
