"Grad School Is in Trouble" says Washington Post

Assuming people are following the news these days, this shouldn’t come as a great surprise. Federal support for universities is on the chopping block.

Back in the Jurassic Era I benefited immensely from various NEH and NSF grants as well as simply the fact that well-funded departments like Linguistics paid me quite generously as an Associate Instructor (along with a much coveted central-campus parking placard) without having nearly the teaching-hours of hard-driving departments like Mathematics and Chemistry. (And back in those days, all scholarships were tax-free regardless of how they were allocated.) So I am indeed concerned for today’s crop of grad students.
