Nelson: Developmental Systems Drift

FYI, those interested in seeing the original deck posted by Nelson here, in which he had a slide that teaches students that abiogenesis is one of the “Three Pillars of Neo-Darwinian Theory,” are in luck. At BL, Greg Wray has written a nice little review (linked below) of evo-devo responses to the false claims about early embryonic mutations in that deck. He links to the original (dated May 1) version of the deck. You can find the fabrication about “pillars of neo-darwinian theory” on page 14.

[Edit to link to Wray article. Originally I linked to the BL forum, which linked to the article.]

Well, evolutionary biology and developmental biology and every field of biology and science is incomplete. Scientific theories are never complete accounts.

True but that’s not really what Paul Nelson is getting at. He seems to be demanding that, unlike a theory such as plate tectonics, which has a limited scope of explanation within the greater field of geology, evolutionary theory needs to be a theory of everything biological. It must explain everything that goes on in biology, not just evolution. A sort of grand unified theory, or theory of everything. A final theory of biology.

And if it doesn’t, then the theory of evolution is an incomplete theory of evolution, and well… you know incomplete theories are wrong, or something to that effect.

Yes, and that isn’t reasonable because no scientific theory is a complete theory, not because evolutionary science is complete.
