Eddie has made such claims before, and failed to substantiate them. In particular, he was unable to find any feature of early European universities that differentiated them from the preceding Muslim school at al-Qarawiyyin. He is once again giving Christianity more credit than it is due, and making the same misleading claims about slavery, Voltaire and ‘liberal democracy’ that he made back then.
That thread finished with Eddie claiming that Greek democracy differed from Western liberal democracy in part because “… Athens violated its own lofty conception of freedom by its imperialism over other Greek cities”, while ignoring the much greater extent of British, French, Dutch, Spanish and German Imperialism. I (still) think that’s enough to reject Eddie’s comments on this subject as being hilariously inept.
