Is yoga and mindfulness religious?

Yoga was controversial at my university. We had a faculty “discussion” when it was added as a general education “activity” course. In the end the compromise was to call it “fitness yoga” and make clear in the course description that it would not include any eastern religious components.

I have no problem with secular Yoga in the USA. My mother, an Indian, cannot imagine a non-religious version of Yoga. In her experience, it is inseperable from Hinduism.
