Meaning and Purpose Among the Nones

I’m surprised you’re claiming it. It’s almost… pharisaical.

He’s your Sovereign, too, whether you own that fact or not.

The issue with this idea is that it makes sense only if there is no correct answer…i.e there is no absolute truth.
If the “meaningfulness” of our existence is only derived from a sense of internal satisfaction, then Hitler, Genghis khan etc have led very meaningful lives atleast in their subjective perspective.
In such a scenario, the concept of 'meaning" loses any sense of being objectively real. Subjective perceptions rule.

And people who stopped them also had meaningful lives.

What is wrong with that? If there were an objectively real meaning of life and it went against everything that we humans find moral and worthy, then what? A subjective meaning of life is a much preferred outcome because it would conform to what humans want.

You are making my point. By this standard, the word “meaning” loses all objective meaning  except in a subjective sense.

A subjective “meaning of life” would be another word for human desires… they would be a fleeting concept that changes from person to person and from time to time in a person’s life.
It’s the same as saying there is no meaning to life.

As it should be.

Yes, just as they should. If the meaning of life is disconnected from what humans want and desire, then what good is it?

Umm, no. It’s the same as saying that the meaning of life is determined by what humans want.

If something is whatever one wants it to mean, then it has no meaning.

It does have meaning, the meaning one wants it to have.

How can something mean entirely opposite things and everything in between?
How can something mean entirely different things at the same time.
As per your understanding, the meaning of life would have billions of meanings.
Something that means everything means nothing.

Because each life is an individual, and each individual may have a different meaning of life.

Humans seem to have a lot they agree on, so there are going to be many commonalities. However, I don’t see how it is a problem if each person has a different view of what gives their own life meaning. Do you think it is better for someone to tell a person what the meaning of their life is, even if it goes against everything that person believes? If the objective meaning of life is to rape and pillage, is that preferable to a subjective meaning of life that is determined by what each person believes and wants? What more important thing is there in human existence than what we believe and want?

It means something to each individual.

A meaning that is made up would be no different than a fantasy… it could be an important fantasy, maybe even precious. But it’s just a fantasy.

Creation can have purpose and meaning only from a creator.

What you want in life is not a fantasy. Is the love I feel for my family and friends a fantasy? Is beauty a fantasy because each person has a different view of what beauty is? Is delicious food a fantasy because each person likes something different?

You seem to be hung up on the idea that subjective means non-existent. That simply isn’t the case.

That’s rather predictable:

I suggest you read that entire article.

Of course not. All these are are real aspects of life. It’s not the meaning or purpose of life.

I don’t see subjective experience experiences as non existent. I see a meaning that can be anything as meaningless.

The argument is ridiculous. It states that an “objective morality” would not be desirable because it could violate the subjective desires or opinions of human beings.

There are two possibilities. An objective morality exists as imposed/determined by the charecter of God or there is no objective basis for morality. I.e there is no good or bad

An argument based on human desires is just wishful thinking.

Why not?

But it isn’t anything. It is what each person decides for themselves.

Why is that ridiculous?

Or there is a good and bad as determined by the subjective beliefs of humans.

Why?

Not he isn’t. I have no Lords nor Masters.

No, I don’t expect you to acknowledge it.

Something doesn’t become true or real just because a person decides he/she wants it to be true.
If the meaning of life is whatever each individual decides it is, then there is no true meaning to life. Its just something people tell themselves so as not to face reality.
As an athiest, you should have the courage to embrace reality and say that life has no meaning or purpose.
Of course, people are free to comfort themselves with whatever lie they want. After all, if life has no meaning or purpose, what does truth matter? If objective truth is inconvenient, we should opt for subjective truths that make us happy. Wouldn’t happiness provide more “meaning” to life?
It’s this kind of mindless logic that has brought society to a “post truth” world.

So a pedophile could decide tomorrow that raping kids is “good” as he finds it good.

This is “post Truth” nonsense… Do you hold to the concept of “post truth”?

What unbelievers (and a lot of Christians) don’t get is that it is all about joy – joy in relationships, the archetype being the joy our unfathomable trinitarian God has in himself and that he wants to share. He didn’t create the universe – and us in it – because he was lonely.

Oh yea, I can just feel the Christian Joy coming from the Governor of Alabama.
