Unexpected confirmation of climate change

Confirmation of climate change came from an unexpected quarter yesterday.

According to the BBC radio news, there is no ice wine being produced in German regions this year because it is made from grapes that freeze while they are still on the vine - and this is the first recorded year when it has not been cold enough to freeze grapes.

Climate is determined by long term trends, not a single season. If people focus on short term trends it may muddy the picture. On top of that, climate change can also result in extreme weather, including extreme cold snaps like the polar vortexes the US has seen in recent times.

This is either extreme weather or a symptom of a long term trend - there’s never been a winter this warm before.
