The castles cartoon illustrates one of the most engrained misconceptions among YEC, that being scientists are somehow engaged in a battle of worldview with Christian faith as the particular target. Aside from a few vocal or strident exceptions, for most researchers, uncovering the workings of nature is its own reward, and little regard is paid to any clash of worldview. Scientists are generally just happy when their research bears results fit to publish, the last thing on anyone’s mind is that this would somehow be threatening to anybody’s religious beliefs. The idea that the they set out motivated by an antipathy to the foundations of Biblical truth is ridiculous.
All the scientific evidence antagonistic to Ken Ham has been produced in the pursuit of understanding our world. Tree ring chronology, isotope dating, astrophysics, geology, paleontology, genetics, none of these fields of investigation were invented to fire canon balls upon the castle of creationism, which is not so much under attack as mostly ignored. The pitched noise and fury of battle is mainly in the heads of YEC.
Could you save the analogy by declaring that the cannons were not being aimed by the scientists but by, well, God (or nature, if you prefer)? The scientists are just firing them to see where the cannonballs go.
I am still trying to figure out what it is about the evangelical community (that I belong to) that makes it so easy for someone to say, “Everyone is attacking us, so I will be your hero. I will fight them furiously to defend YOU! And when others attack what I’m saying, they’re not attacking ME, they’re attacking YOU!”
It happens not just in the realm of science, as the last 5 years of American politics shows.
The truth is inevitably cast aside by this tribalism.
I looked through my old photos of the Creation Museum from 2008 but did not find a picture of that exhibit. It was based on the cartoon presented here. The last I was at the museum, about 2 years ago, it was no longer a prominent display and looked aged. It may have been removed since then.
